Obia Turley, daughter of Theodore and Frances Turley was born on this day in Churchville, Peel County, Ontario, Canada in 1834. She only lived 3 1/2 weeks. She was most likely buried here in the Churchville Cemetery, near the family home.
This cemetery is one of the most beautiful pioneer cemeteries I’ve ever visited. I felt peace and love and heartache there and I wandered and studied the headstones.
Theodore Turley Jr, her older brother is probably also buried here. He was born 4 September 1822 in Birmingham, England, came with the family to Churchville, and then died here at age 15 in 1837.
In a letter Theodore wrote to his dear friend, Isaac Russell in 1837 from Churchville, “Theodore has fallen asleep in Christ, Dear Brother, I have been tried by the powers of darkness on this account as well as others. . .” This letter was printed in the Deseret News, Church News 11 Sept 1937, p. 5, “Isaac Russell letters to the Church.”
Here is a look at the cemetery today. These photos were taken in June 2013 when Rick Turley and I visited there. I hope you feel the peace and beauty we felt. Here is Theodore’s Family Memorial, listing the births and some of the deaths of his family members:
