Lewis, John & Peggy Nauvoo Mission

Obituary: John Dean Lewis
Published: Thursday, Nov. 8 2001

John Dean Lewis, age 85, passed away November 6, 2001, at home, surrounded by loving family members.

John was born Oct. 22, 1916, in Spanish Fork, UT, the youngest of four children, to Frederick and Sarah Jane “Sadye” Lewis. On Aug. 8, 1941, he married his sweetheart, Catherine “Peggy” Conley in the Logan LDS Temple. They are the parents of nine children.
After spending early years in Spanish Fork, McCammon, ID, and Benjamin, Utah, John’s widowed mother settled the family in Provo where she worked hard to support her four children. John developed natural abilities in athletics, music, and in always being the life of the party. He graduated from BYU in accounting and added a year of graduate work at USC. While living in the Los Angeles area, John first caught sight of Peggy at the LDS Wilshire Ward.

John’s accounting career introduced him to a variety of industries in southern California, Mesa, Arizona, and Salt Lake City, Utah. He eventually found his way into hospital management and retired from Intermountain Health Care in 1981.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John loved to teach, minister, and coach any basketball or softball team he could get his hands on. He was a dedicated bishop in the Los Altos Ward, Hacienda Heights, CA, and in 1988-89, he and his wife served a rewarding mission to Nauvoo.

John has been a devoted husband and father, always doing whatever was necessary to care for his family. There was plenty of laughter, music, and fun amid the hard work and discipline that defined him. Above all, he could always find time for another golf game and the inevitable hole-by-hole retelling. Life with John and Peggy was a delicious assortment of experiences and opportunities built on a foundation of unfailing love.

John is survived by his sweet wife of 60 years, his seven children, Christine (Bill) Owens of Phoenix, AZ, Roberta Lewis and John C. (Ann) Lewis of Orem, Barbara (Lowell) Camp of Alpine, Jeffrey (Kathleen) Lewis of Minnetonka, MN, David (Celeste) Lewis of Highland, and Diana (Tak) Wakimoto of Sandy, two sons-in-law, Thomas Kimmel, Jr. and Gary Lassen, 25 grandchildren, and four great-grand-children.

John was preceded in death by two wonderful daughters, Kathryn Kimmel and Bonny Lassen; his sister, Kathryn Sorenson; his two brothers, Frederick Lewis and Bert Lewis, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Lakeridge North Stake Center, 450 S. 100 W., Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held at the Stake Center beginning at 1 p.m. Interment, Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
