(Is mother Christina Bertha missing because she was pregnant?) Another son named Heinrich Ludwig was born 9 May 1883. Three children died as infants (Caroline b. 1867, Marie b. 1875 and Paul b. 1879.Today is the birthday of my 2nd Great-Grandpa, Leonhard Heinrich Schott. This is what a birth entry looks like in German church records. His entry is #52 that year, it tells us his parents are Johann Leonhard Schott, farmer and wine grower, Evangelisch, and his mother is Luise Christina (maiden name) Böhringer, also Evangelisch. He was born in Grossgartach on 2 October at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, christened on the 7th of October at the church. The Pfarrer, or minister was named Herr Bächler. It also lists friends and family members who were witnesses at the christening.
My grandpa Rudolf said this about his father, “My father worked about 25 acres of land–about 30 pieces scattered in 1 1/2 mile radius around the village. He was community minded, served long years in the village counsel, also church counsel, was representative for widows and orphans, substituted for the mayor. All without pay.”
Below is a Family Register entry for his family. These are wonderful records, kept on every family in the parish. They list the parents, occupations (here Leonhard is listed as a factory worker) their grandparents, and each of their children. The children’s births, confirmations and deaths might also be listed. Leonhard and Christine had 9 children. Three of them died as young children. My Great Grandmother, Caroline, is listed here as the second child.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours pouring over these church records. It’s here that I’ve discovered and met many of my thousands of German ancestors. It thrills me that these records have been kept, saved and preserved.
Happy Birthday, Grandpa Leonhard!
Leonhard Heinrich married Christina Bertha Sieber in Grossgartach on May 12, 1867 and they had 9 children. Their 2nd child, Caroline Christiane was my great-grandma. Here is her picture and a picture of the home she lived in where my grandpa Rudolf was born in 1899.
