On this day more than 100 years ago, my grandma Ruby’s little sister Lucille, died tragically. She was 2 1/2 years old. It breaks my heart to consider it. Here are the documents I’ve found surrounding her sad death:
Utah Digital Newspapers
Southern Utonian, The Beaver Press Newspaper, 1909-06-18
Utah State News:
From the Emanuel Richard Lundquist’s Autobiography:
In the year of 1912 on the 15th of May I had the misfortune of losing my wife, after an illness of bronchial pneumonia, lasting but 10 days. She had an asthma condition which bothered her throughout her married life and longer. She was the mother of 8 children – 5 boys and 3 girls, and was true and faithful both to the church and to her family.
About 3 years prior to the above we lost Lucille, being at the time 2 1/2 years of age. She set fire to her clothes, thereby burning herself so badly that she died the same day, or June 11, 1909.
This is a photo of Lucille’s sister, Elsie, who was born in 1904. She would have been 5 years old when Lucille died. I wonder if they looked alike. Adorable children. A heartbreaking loss for the family.
Update! I found a photo of Lucile in my Aunt Elsie’s history. Elsie was Lucille’s sister.
